All About the Brady Gun Campaign Organization: What is their Goal?

Gun Violence is a devastating and massive issue in the United States of America, that causes thousands of lives lost each year. The ongoing debate over gun control has led to strong advocacy efforts from numerous organizations, with one of the most prominent being the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, commonly known as Brady. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to reducing gun violence through legislative action, public awareness, and accountability measures aimed at gun manufacturers and irresponsible gun dealers. Brady is the leading gun violence prevention organization in America that has played a crucial role in shaping gun laws and policies for decades.

The organization was founded in 1974 by Dr. Mark Borinksy, who survived being robbed and nearly killed by a gunman. His personal experience with gun violence motivated him to take action and advocate for stronger gun control measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring. The organization gained major national momentum in 1981 when a gunman tried to assassinate President Reagan, and left White House Press Secretary James Brady permanently disabled. James and his wife, Sarah Brady, became fierce advocates for gun reform, leading to the enactment of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993. This landmark legislation mandated federal background checks on firearm purchasers and established the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

From 1974 until today, in 2025, Brady has kept trying to fight for more and more Gun change in America. The group’s mission has focused on making gun control laws stronger, promoting responsible gun ownership, and holding gun manufacturers accountable. The organization employs a multi-faceted approach that includes legislative advocacy, public education campaigns, and legal action to drive meaningful change. By focusing on common-sense solutions, Brady strives to create a safer and more responsible culture of gun ownership in America.

The organization has played a part in some noticeable changes in the national gun related homicide rate which decreased by 17% since June 2024, the largest drop in years. It helped pass a law banning the sale of ghost guns in 16 states and shut down the nation’s largest maker of ghost guns. The organization has helped to expand background checks for the sale of guns at gun shows and online.

Brady’s impact extends beyond legislation to focus on public awareness and education, with grassroots initiatives, partnerships with local communities, and survivor advocacy aimed at raising awareness about the real consequences of gun violence and empowering individuals to take action. The organization also supports victims of gun violence and their families, providing them with resources, legal assistance, and platforms to share their stories.

By focusing on common-sense solutions, Brady keeps working to create a safer and more responsible approach to gun ownership.  The organization’s dedication, perseverance, and success demonstrate that meaningful progress is possible, and with continued efforts, a safer America can become a reality.
