The organization was founded in 1974 by Dr. Mark Borinksy, who survived being robbed and nearly killed by a gunman. This landmark legislation mandated federal background checks on firearm purchasers and established the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

It helped pass a law banning the sale of ghost guns in 16 states and shut down the nation’s largest maker of ghost guns. The organization has helped to expand background checks for the sale of guns at gun shows and online.
