Three New Exhibitions in El Prado: Exquisite Western Art

There are a variety of powerful new exhibits coming to the Museo del Prado in Madrid, showcasing masters of Western art with a variety of styles (Blanes). Three of the artists to be shown are El Greco, Paolo Veronese, and Rafael Mengs (Blanes).

According to the director of the museum, the intention is to capture different expressions, “with clear lines of action,” while still picking up on contemporary themes (Blanes).

Pepa Blanes, a journalist for Cadena SER reported that the first exhibition will showcase El Greco’s work, curated by Leticia Ruiz  (Blanes). It will show some of the artist’s work that has not yet been seen side-by-side  (Blanes). Many of the pieces have not been seen together since 1830  (Blanes). A main piece will be the Assumption of the Virgin  (Blanes).

In another exhibition, there will be pieces from painter Paolo Veronese, including Mars and Venus United by Love  (Blanes). Later in the year, some of Rafael Mengs paintings will be shown in November at an exhibit that will include a variety of types of art, from sculptures to manuscripts, exhibiting his influential style that spearheaded the neoclassical movement  (Blanes). Other exhibitions from the past will continue  (Blanes).

El Greco’s Santo Domingo el Antiguo was part of a commission finished in 1579 that has been separated, consisting of a grand altarpiece and two altarpieces on each side (Villarreal). After not being shown there for over 100 years, The Art Institute of Chicago has worked with El Prado to organize its exhibition (Villarreal). Eight of the pieces painted for the conventual church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo will be shown (“El Greco”). El Greco, the Prado writes, was a “great master, bold and capable” in his Italian-styled work. The exhibition will run from February 18 to June 15 (Villarreal). This will be shown in the Central Gallery (Menéndez).

El Greco’s The Disrobing of Christ

The exhibition “Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) will be shown from May 27 to June 21 (Villarreal). The museum will be highlighting Veronese’s influence on Golden Age era-Spanish art (Villarreal). It will present his Venetian Renaissance paintings, which, according to the museum, are part of a collection of “the most important and finest…” paintings in this genre that have been studied (“Paolo Veronese). This exhibition will take place in the Jerónimos Building (Menéndez).

Veronese’s Venus and Adonis

“Anton Raphael Mengs. The Greatest Painter of the 18th Century” will be shown from November 25, 2025, to March 1, 2026 in the Hieronymites Building (Menéndez). It will include 150 works of art in a variety of artistic mediums, and will highlight who impacted the artist (Villarreal). Great figures of the historical art world like Raphael and Corregio, who impacted his artistic journey, will be evident (Villarreal).

Mengs’ Self-Portrait

No exhibition of this magnitude has been done (Villarreal). The audience will gain insight into how Mengs works (Villarreal). El Prado remains the most frequented Madrid museum. The new monuments provide a revolutionary collection for any kind of viewer to appreciate. A trip to El Prado in 2025 is worthwhile, particularly for enthusiasts of Western fine art with Italian influence.
